Icefall

Buy the book!

My debut book ‘Icefall’ tells the true story of overcoming adversity on a relentless journey to the top of the world, and has already been endorsed by Bear Grylls and explorer Mark Wood. Icefall won bronze in the Readers Favorite International Book Contest 2016.

“A suspenseful memoir marked by adventure, hardship, and achievement, Icefall is the remarkable true story of a teenager’s journey to conquer Mount Everest. Plagued by adversity and epilepsy as a child, Alex developed a determination and will to succeed that would ultimately lead him from his home in Cheshire, England to the face of Everest at only eighteen years old. Though his will to reach the summit was extraordinary, he could have never anticipated the unprecedented dangers and risks that the mountain had in store for him. In this inspirational tale of tragedy and redemption, Alex reveals the universal truth that adversity may be the greatest teacher of all, but nothing can teach you more about life than death”.

Don’t take my word for it…

“Descriptions of Everest Base Camp in both 2014 and 2015 are honest and harrowing. This is a great read and I’m excited to see what Alex does next”

“It was an epic event which provoked him to sit down and write an autobiography at the unfeasibly young age of 19. The result is an enthralling tale, well told”

“Books about Everest have become so commonplace that readers might wonder if there’s still anything new to say about the mountain. And, let’s face it, ‘inspirational’ is an over-used word these days – in fact, I tend to avoid it. But in the case of Alex Staniforth and his book Icefall, inspirational is the right word to use. This is one of the most remarkable books about Everest I have ever read, and it deserves its place in the corpus of work about the mountain.”

“Even if you are not a mountain climber or never dream of climbing Mount Everest, there are valuable lessons in Icefall by Alex Staniforth. Icefall is so much more than just an adventure story about a teenager who climbs a mountain. It is a well-written narrative with a very personal style that makes it feel as if Alex Staniforth is talking to you directly. I loved the personality that flowed from these pages and really made Alex feel like a friend, especially as he talked about sharing his dream of his ascent.”

“Fantastic, fascinating journey of a young man. I enjoyed the book immensely and it gave me hope and inspiration to strive for better things. If anybody has struggles in their life this is a lovely book to give a positive outlook. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, it is well written… what a little gem”

“I was very much looking forward to Alex’s book hitting the shelves, and I wasn’t disappointed! Proof that when someone puts their mind to achieving a goal, it can be reached, despite the multitude of hurdles that have to be overcome. If you’re lacking in inspiration and get up and go, then this is the book for you.”

“Adversity can be so cruel but Alex has fought back time and time again. The book also shows that one mans achievements are grown within a community and that we are to never rule out our dreams. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring me to get out and get on.”

New Book – Another Peak

Published in July 2019, ‘Another Peak’ explores mental health challenges through outdoor adventure. It shares an insight into depression and eating disorders whilst rediscovering purpose following two Everest attempts and an expedition to climb Cho Oyu, before embarking on Climb The UK in 2017. Another Peak goes deeper into the peaks and troughs of mental health than ever before, giving hope and inspiration to help others find their own Everest.

Hello March! We made it... In January I posed the Hello March! We made it...
In January I posed the #LockdownLap challenge: could we virtually run, walk or cycle 11,000 miles around the UK coast before March 1st? Turns out we could. More than 4 times. 249 of you covered over 45,000 miles. It's been great to see so many photos and I couldn't even fit them all into the collage...
.
Inspiring to see how creating a community kept people connected through such a isolating time. Thanks to everyone who got stuck in, shared their photos and donated @mind_o_mountains so we can help others get outside for their mental health too. I've never done anything like this before and learnt a lot - thanks for bearing with me.
.
A big shout to @ellis_brigham for donating prizes each week to keep us motivated with the best outdoor kit.
.
So... what's next? Did you pick up any new habits? New routes? New challenges? How about a real lap of the UK coastline?!
Let's hear them...
.
Final shout-out to my mum who managed 51 days of walking in a row, maybe that's where the competition comes from ;-)

Bring on the races in amazing places. . Finally bi Bring on the races in amazing places.
.
Finally bit the bullet and entered my first proper ultra - the 44-mile Grand Tour Skiddaw in August, which includes the summit of Skiddaw just for good measure. I'm an ultra-running amateur but after racing loads from 5km to marathon, I'm curious to see what I can do with some competition and focus. Just need to work all this into the training plan alongside various other daft challenge ideas. Anyone else got any races in the calendar yet?

Take my advice – I don’t use it anyway! . Even Take my advice – I don’t use it anyway!
.
Even for a professional speaker, I think most of us are bad at taking our own advice sometimes. Felt a bit out of place speaking (virtually) about resilience and well-being to senior doctors, ICU consultants and nursing staff at 3 NHS hospitals in Essex today. 12-hour days in full PPE with very sick patients makes my challenges look easy. My closest experience was the Nepal earthquake on Everest in 2015 and the aftermath at Base Camp, and that was only a few days.
.
Healthcare staff are always pushing to put their patients first and sometimes we just need to hear from other people that it’s OK to stop and take a break - in fact, it’s essential. I can't imagine what it’s been like working in the NHS this last year. Privileged to give something back, if only the escape of a few uplifting adventure stories.

The simple freedoms. A week before lockdown #1 and The simple freedoms. A week before lockdown #1 and life as we knew it changed forever, all the bad news and anxiety started to get totally overwhelming. I dropped a message to my mate @cal_james95 who luckily had the same idea.
.
With a decent forecast we grabbed the tent, headed up Holme Fell with no WiFi connection, and had an awesome sunrise across Coniston Water with our morning coffee and biscuits (Fox’s too - top shout). For a short while in nature the world seemed OK again and it was hard to believe so much was going wrong. Almost wish I’d stayed up there to wait for this whole thing to blow over, though I'd have probably ran out of biscuits by now...
.
Those simple freedoms will be better than ever. Whatever happens on the news tonight, keep looking forward. What are you most looking forward to?
